With the initials U.S., Uncle Sam has become the national personification of the American government. With the recruitment poster designed by James Montgomery Flagg in 1917, Uncle Sam got his standard appearance - white hair and a goatee, wearing a white top hat with white stars on a blue band, a blue tail coat, and red-and-white-striped trousers.
Over 4 million posters of Uncle Sam were printed during World War I. Created by the artist, James Montgomery Flagg, the illustration was based on his own face.
Flagg was a prolific illustrator who sold his first work at the age of 12. During his career he work for numerous popular magazines - The Saturday Evening Post, and Colliers.
A man of style, he invented the Brooks Brothers pink oxford shirt.
